Big Brother
Remember 'Big Brother' from Orwell's (then) 'futuristic' horror-flic "1984"...? Well apparently the folks who authorize the 'rehab' DAP (Drug Rehabilitation Program) for federal inmates do. And apparently they take rather kindly to it. It's a sad, expenseive joke. Now that the govt. says they are going to economize, I can see DAP being dismantled. It's useless, I know, I been there. Get a closer look yourself. Read this blog posted by inmates who have been there. ~~~

Eddy Lepp
Charles Edward Lepp is a Vietnam War veteran, currently serving a 10-year sentence for the crime of "conspiracy and cultivation with the intent to distribute marijuana".
According to Wikipedia, "Lepp became the first person arrested, tried, and acquitted under California’s medical marijuana law. A subsequent raid on his property in 2002 resulted in confiscation but not prosecution. After this, the gardens really took off, and Lepp devotedly explored the intersections between the religious and medical uses of marijuana. The couple formed a church, Lepp became an ordained minister, and their property became known as Eddy’s Medicinal Gardens and Multi-Denominational Chapel of Cannabis and Rastafari where he grew more than 20,000 pot plants in plain view of a state highway in Northern California's Lake County.
This large grow, even though compliant with California law, did not sit well with Federal officials who arrested him again and barred him from using medical marijuana or religious defenses. He was convicted in September 2008. From time to time, we will share some of Eddy's comments:
"Visits are a wonderful thing. Sadly for must of us they happen way too seldom. A friend of mine has been in for 14 years with 6 left to go and has had 3 visits total. For a country that encourages family values, we do little to encourage they last with outrageous sentences from the start." ~Eddy Lepp

One more xmas to go.
Merry Xmas to all of you from me also. Here it was ok as jail goes. Lots of food, a plastic bag full of junk food (mostly candy and chips etc), xmas lights the guys put up and their xmas play (of which their practice interfered with our geezer yoga class but I tolereated them). This was all interrupted however by never ending 'emergency counts.' The counts are the worst thing probably about all this, they are ceaseless. No one ever is gone either -- at least this year. Actually 3 ran off last year.
Regarding the articles referenced in the post below, and the one about letting prisoners smoke pot in prison, the guy I am writing a book about spent two years in Mexican prisons where pot was readily available as well as booze and glue. You can read all about it soon in "Lencho: The true story of a marijuana pioneer."

Can Lady Liberty tollerate so many behind bars? |
As I read this article I couldn't help but think of you... and everyone else in this country. How could "we the people" let this happen to us? I've asked myself that question many times, and I keep recalling that the answer was given thousands of years ago in early Old Testament writings, to wit: "Give us a king." When people are too lazy, too ignorant, too apathetic to look after themselves and their needs they find it expedient to subject themselves to the alleged wisdom of someone more powerful than they are. Where does the enhanced power come from? From us. We abdicate our own thrones and pass the collective torch to some entity that we mistakenly perceive will take better care of us than we can. Sheesh!!! We all should think more like this.
